The month kicked off with flawless execution at the 13th Annual Stampone O'Brien Dilsheimer Holloway Law Escape The Cape Triathlon. We were blessed to have perfect conditions, highly motivated athletes, and an incredibly supportive community that makes Escape the most coveted Sprint/Olympic distance triathlon on the East Coast. What many people didn't see are the efforts of the crew when no one was around. There are many long, hot days to bring an event to life. Every single Team DelMo member has a "REAL" full-time job aside from working on the events. What does that mean? It means, they don't have to be here, they want to be here...and it shows.
Did you know as athletes were jumping off the ferry a second select team of highly talented DelMo personnel were assisting nearly 2000 riders over the Ben Franklin Bridge for the 53rd Annual American Cancer Society Bike-A-Thon? Yes, we were in two places at the same time, which is only possible when you surround yourself with great people.
The following week, a few members of Team DelMo boarded the Cape May-Lewes Ferry, not to jump off, but to travel to Cambridge, MD and be a part of the amazing Ironman team to help with the 30th Annual Eagleman 70.3. Our crew was behind the scenes setting up barricade, truss, and doing any/everything to help make that event successful. I was not there. I placed my trust, and my good name, in the hands of Tommy, Chris, Kyle, Sean and a few local boys from Southern Delaware known as, "The Wrecking Crew." This is the response I received from Ironman:
"Steve, each day from the first day, your team was Everything we could’ve asked for. They were kind, helpful, effective, and professional. They offered to help every time they saw a need, and in many instances they just helped. I really appreciate everything your team did for us at Eagleman, And I couldn’t be happier with the decision to add DelMoPro to our team."
How did I get to this point? How did I build this team? Where do I find great people? This is an easy question to answer, but the journey to realize the answers took decades. I have an unquenchable thirst for excellence. I cannot tolerate, and will not tolerate substandard work, effort, or attitude. I don't have to say it, the people around me can feel it the same way our athletes can feel the energy within any one of our three DelMo triathlons. You cannot place your finger on it, but you ABSOLUTELY know it's there. If you want to build your own high-performance team, in anything you do, follow these five rules:
1-Eliminate anyone other than an A player immediately. Don't wait.
2-When you huddle up, give everyone an equal opportunity to have a voice.
3-Lead by example. The way you do things speaks VOLUMES without saying a word.
4-Always Give Feedback. Praise when praise is deserved. Correct when correction is needed.
5-Be approachable. If your crew can't go to you, they don't trust you. If they don't trust you, they don't respect you. If they don't respect you. You have nothing. On the flip side, if your crew can go to you, they trust you, if they trust you, they respect you, if they respect you, they'll run through a wall for you. If you have that, anything is possible.
Follow those 5 rules consistently over time, and watch the results come to fruition. When you only Bring In Hitters, you eventually win the big games.
