For as long as I can remember I’ve always lived on the school calendar.

What does that mean? The school calendar is built from Labor Day to Memorial Day with summer being the Peak Experience. You see, I grew up in a motel in North Wildwood, NJ called the Harbor Light Motor Inn. My mom and dad moved us from Philadelphia in 1979 and with zero experience started a business. It was not easy. Many, many things went wrong before they ever went right, but quitting was never an option. Our lives revolved around the summer months when they had a finite window to earn. Some summers were good, some were really bad, but the one thing that was reliable was change.
Our calendar went like this: Summer was our time to shine and we would routinely see the same families year in and year out and growing up alongside their children. Fall was spent shutting the building down and making the plan for what was to be done to make the business better so those trusted families would see those tiny changes and feel the love my parents put into the business. Winter was spent marketing to our customers while making small improvements in the motel rooms. Spring was spent answering the phones, taking reservations, and opening the building to our first guests in early May.
My parents (and now my brother and sister-in law) have been implementing this strategy for nearly 50 years. Why? It works.
With the 2025 DelMo event calendar officially in the rear-view mirror, we are full steam ahead into the 2026 season and the Fall has been spent on planning many small improvements to our events (some you may not notice, but will feel) and others that will make significant enhancements of which our athletes will see and feel the love…just like my mom and dad taught me.
You see, I had no idea they were prepping me for this thing called “DelMo.” I didn’t realize how vital their lessons of repetition were going to become. I had no idea I was being indoctrinated into a life of entrepreneurship and more important than having the savvy to sell is having the guts to be consistent and endure. The #1 lesson I learned from my parents (at least as I write this) was to take my shot or live a life or regret. In a world of YouTube motivation and wondering if what you’re seeing is AI or the real deal I was blessed to be carried along on their journey and ultimately be inspired to take my shot.
My school calendar is a bit different than my parents, but my wife and I have chartered a course for our work and our family, and we hope you’re doing the same.
Much love and gratitude to this community,
Delmo
