We decided to interview two very different athletes this month. Steve represents Wild Harbor Tri Club and Anh represents T3 Philly!
Each month, we sit down with a DelMoSports athlete and ask them five questions.
Meet DelMo Athletes, Steve DeHorsey and Anh Dang.
1. What are your race goals this season?
Steve: I am doing four races this year, two Sprint distance and two Olympic distance races. My goals are to improve each race, feel more confident, and have more fun every race. By the end of summer, I am looking to: run a mile in 7:30, run 13.1 miles, and bike 50 miles under 3 hours.
Anh: I am working through some injuries right now. My current goal is to get back in shape and develop a strong mix between swimming, cycling and running. I'm training for a few focus races selected by my multisport club, T3 Philly.
2. Best racing advice?
Steve: I am still very new to the sport, but what I have learned so far is you cannot duplicate race day, do your best to train for everything and stay composed through the all the fun and obstacles on race day. Finally yet importantly, SMILE.
Anh: In every race, there are things you do well & things you can improve.
3. Favorite pre-race meal?
Steve: I have only completed two races so far BUT I like pasta, bread, salad the day before and something light (eggs, toast, and coffee) the morning of in addition to fruit and energy bars. Somebody said oatmeal; I am going to have to try that one.
Anh: No pasta for me! I'd like a glass of wine & a tartufo Italian ice-cream dessert.
4. What is your race mantra?
Steve: I do not have a race mantra yet but I find that I have been talking to myself a lot during trainings and convincing myself to find a way and push through the painful times. My convincing includes belittling myself, followed by building myself back up and distracting my mind with current life problems/situations. The best is when you get in the zone where your mind is somewhere else and your body is in a rhythmic motion.
Anh: Time to kick some a$$!
5. Tell us three things we should know about you.
Steve: My first triathlon was Escape the Cape last year, where my timer came off during the jump from the boat (DNF) and our 3rd child was born 12 hours after crossing the finish line. It was a rollercoaster of a day. I am a soccer player who is learning to swim-bike-run and is lucky enough to have a beautiful wife and three little kids (AJ, Jordyn, Nora) who give me time to train and like cheering for daddy on race day.
Anh: I live in South Philly with my partner Dan and our black lab named Casey. A lots of things I do have a common theme, which is to promote diversity and inclusion. I organize many activities, including a weekly track workout for T3 Philly, that are beginners friendly. I'm one of the organizers of the first-ever Pride Run Philly on June 18, when we hope to connect and celebrate the running community and the LGBTQ community.
