A Girl Who TRI's! She is a Model, Endurance Race Announcer, a Podcast Host, and an inspiration to many...check out our Q&A with Michanda!
1. Tell us 3 things we should know about you.
A: I Swim, Bike, Run - LOL! Ok seriously, I’m the Host of Tri Beginner’s Luck Podcast, I love to cook, and I never meet a stranger!
2. When and how you began your triathlon journey?
A: In 2009, I was introduced to the sport of triathlon when a friend asked me to swim as part of a relay team for their birthday. I was amazed and knew that one day I wanted to participate in a triathlon myself. In 2014, I joined the Y-Tri newbie program and began training for Tri Rock Philly. Since then, I have been hooked on the sport and have continued to participate in triathlons. In June, I get to celebrate racing for 10 years…Heck yeah!
3. What do you love most about triathlon?
A: There is always an opportunity to learn, improve, and challenge myself in different ways. Oh and it’s fun! It’s like a never-ending puzzle.
4. What is your favorite workout song?
A: Currently, It’s a toss between So Good by Elevation Worship, and Industry Baby by Lil Nas X featuring Jack Harlow!
5. What is one piece of advice you have for anyone looking to get involved in triathlon?
A: Just Tri! You'll be amazed by what you're capable of. Don't let fear hold you back from unleashing the power within! Take the first step!
6. What is your race mantra for 2024?
A: The theme of this year is Locked IN and Focused. I tell myself, Michanda just take it one moment at a time staying locked in and focused on the goal!
7. What is your favorite memory from participating in a DelMoSports event?
A: The race had so many things to remember, but a couple of them I can't forget. Steve was searching for the person to sing the national anthem, and he asked the crowd if anyone wanted to sing. One athlete got up and sang her heart out, and it was super powerful. It reminded me that you should always be ready because you never know when it's your time to shine! This might sound weird, but I couldn't stop talking about the port-a-potties. They were like luxury bathrooms on steroids, with all the amenities a girl could ask for! It's the little things that make a huge difference, right? It changed my relationship with port-a-potties for at least 36 hours, lol!
8. How do you stay motivated to keep training while managing your day to day/other responsibilities?
A: This is tough, especially since I've transitioned into a more traditional 9-5 job. It really helps that my coach and I use a program that rewards me with a green color code if I complete a workout. This motivates me to continue because I enjoy the satisfaction of seeing the green light up on my Training Peaks. Another thing that motivates me is the way I feel after working out consistently. It gives me the energy I need to manage obstacles or challenges that may come my way.
9. What do you believe is the greatest challenge most athletes are facing today?
A: It is difficult to determine the biggest challenge that most athletes face today, however, there are some common themes that have emerged. Firstly, sport can be quite expensive. Secondly, many athletes feel uncomfortable in the water or may not know how to swim. Additionally, once an athlete has paid for a race, they may also need to factor in the costs of travel and other associated fees, especially if the race is not local. Time can also be a challenge, as athletes may need to balance their training with work, family, and other commitments. Athletes who have children may need to arrange for childcare during training and events. Finally, proximity to races can also be a challenge for athletes.
